Transatlantic Symposium on Sustainable Development: Ambiente, Saúde e Bem-estar
Compreendendo as perceções dos estudantes de ciências sociais sobre o ambiente e a natureza: Implicações para o pensamento crítico, reimaginar futuros sociológicos e enriquecer os diálogos interculturais.
Fátima Alves, Diogo Guedes Vidal, Vitória Lourenço e Vanda Viegas, investigadoras e investigador do Societies and Environmental Sustainability Research Line do Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People & the Planet e da sua extensão na Universidade Aberta de Portugal, bem como do Laboratório Associado Terra, apresentaram os resultados preliminares de um estudo realizado com estudantes da unidade curricular "Ambiente, Saúde e Bem-estar" da Universidade Aberta, Portugal no Transatlantic Symposium on Sustainable Development que aconteceu entre 2-4 outubro no Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, EUA. O estudo procurou explorar as perceções dos estudantes, moldadas por seus contextos individuais, sobre o ambiente e a natureza, focando-se na sua posição sobre a crise ambiental e num apelo para vislumbrarem cenários socioecológicos futuros. Este estudo destaca a importância de reconhecer e acolher a diversidade na educação socioecológica, reforçando a necessidade de adaptar estratégias educacionais para acomodar perspetivas diversas, identificar barreiras, promover o pensamento crítico e estimular a inovação pode inspirar soluções contextualmente relevantes para desafios socioambientais globais
Understanding social sciences students' perceptions of the environment and nature: Implications for critical thinking, reimagining socioecological futures, and enriching intercultural dialogues.
Fátima Alves, Diogo Guedes Vidal, Vitória Lourenço and Vanda Viegas, researchers from the Societies and Environmental Sustainability Research Line at the Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People & the Planet, as well as their extension at the Open University of Portugal, and also from the Associate Laboratory TERRA, presented preliminary results of a study conducted with students of the curricular unit "Environment, Health, and Well-being" of the Universidade Aberta, Portugal, at the Transatlantic Symposium on Sustainable Development held between October 2-4 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA. The study aimed to explore students' perceptions, shaped by their individual contexts, regarding the environment and nature, focusing on their stance on the environmental crisis and a call to envision socioecological future scenarios. This study underscores the importance of recognizing and embracing diversity in socioecological education. It reinforces the need to adapt educational strategies to accommodate diverse perspectives, identify barriers, promote critical thinking, and stimulate innovation, which can inspire contextually relevant solutions to global socioenvironmental challenges.
